BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF
I P A L Á N

i n   f o u n d a t i o n
.
The Biosphere Reserve of IPALÁN (in foundation)
is a desertificated ex-rural landscape which is slowly regreening itself.
Situated between Playa de Santiago and San Sebastian in the dry southeast
of La Gomera the lower pressure of lifestock-keeping and the winter rainfalls
of the last years supported the selfhealing process of this area. The pioneer
vegetation is recovering and the first forest trees return. Since many years
ecoactivists help natures recovering with seeding- and planting-actions
and clean the landscape and hiking paths also. The eldest planted
trees are now around 15 years old. Officially only the nature
monument of the "
Barranco de El Cabrito" and some
coastal areas are environmentally protected. But
many ecoactivists have the vision to protect
the whole area (around a quater of the
island) and to support it´s
further regreening. Zones of
ecological agriculture shall be
integrated in nature and artistic events
along the hiking pathes shall attract hiking tourists.

Actions:

The SEEDING of
wild endemical plants

is motivated by supporting the
natural recovering with human help.
Species that became extict in some area
get the opportunity to germinate, grow and
spread again. We give a special focus to species
with big seeds, which are not spread naturally
any more by animals or other natural forces,
like Orijama (right), Juniper and Dragon tree.

The SEEDING and PLANTING
of cultivated plants (desert fruits)
has a longlasting tradition in this agricultural
landscape. Still there are existing many cultivated
plants from the times bevore the desertification,
like Aloe vera, Agave, Fig cactus, Peppertree
and many others. All the newer seedings
and plantations are experiments of
ecoactivists to find out, which plants
could be cultivated here under the dry
conditions of the current situation - and
which could have the potential to found
a new kind of integrated agriculture here.
